Beauty is Only Skin Deep

We have all heard the phrase, "beauty is only skin deep". It is true that when we refer to someone as beautiful, he or she usually has a beautiful heart which reflects their noble character. However, I beg to argue that it does not hurt to look beautiful. Just take a look at some of the most beautiful people in the world as nominated by publications such as People Magazine - Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Julia Roberts, et al. They have fame, fortune and powerful friends.

Let's take the argument to the real world, the world we live in, or at least, the world I live in. I have a beautiful friend, beautiful in the classic sense - tall, blonde, great figure, and pretty. Everywhere we go, people do a double-take, or worse, outrightly stare at her. To add to it, she is generous, approachable, intelligent and she is a loyal friend.

Having spent time with her 8 hours a day for 5 days a week usually, because we work together, and about 8 days on holidays in Fiji, I think I can argue that there are benefits to being beautiful.

My said friend is a part-time model, thus earning extra pocket money, has rich and famous friends, mainly sporting stars in Australian Rules (Aussie football), rugby, cricket and basketball. In fact she has dated a few AFL footballers. When we went out after a work function, we had drinks bought for us, because she either knew the people at the club, or guys just wanted to buy her drinks in the hope of befriending her, or worse, to pick her up.

Quite frequently her friends get her free stuff (designer sporting gear and accessories), and she gets tickets and passes to the best sporting events, and we are talking good seats, box seats, etc. She has been taken to fancy restaurants, flown to Sydney for the weekend and had accommodation all paid for. She constantly picks up loads of free stuff from her modelling, and is getting a portfolio done for pretty much free because people get her in contact with up and coming photographers.

While we were in Fiji, we would get invites to join other holidaymakers for meals, drinks at the bar/restaurant, to play pool, or to go out to town and hang out. We received the attention of the resort staff as well, and befriended a few who looked after us well, and showed us how the locals lived.

It does not seem to hurt her career chances professionally either. She gets opportunities to go interstate for work, which is to her credit because she is prepared to get up and go at even the latest notice. And she is usually the one most appropriate for the tasks.

Therefore, beauty may only be skin deep and it also lies in the eye of the beholder, but it sure does not hurt to be beautiful in the eye of the world.
